Breaking out of the icy arms of January

I can't say I am sad to bid January farewell.

The 'flu plague' that hit the States made its way here too.....
We've averaged 1.4 kids home from school sick every day for the past 3 weeks...

(although some days, the illness level was questionable - one day X & Z were making forts 3 minutes after the bus left)

The 'December dump' (snow) + freezing January temps has created basically a giant urban ice rink in Kiev.
(our driveway is deadly - Logan & I have both bit it on this sloped sheet of ice)

The ice path on our road has gotten so deep you hardly need to steer - just bump down the track like a Disneyland car ride.

The problem is cars parked too close to said path.  This car frequently parks right across our street - next to a jagged ice rivet....
The other day, after 4 unsuccessful attempts to pass (kept skidding closer), a street clogging with cars waiting for me, I aborted my mission, backed up & went home....

...snapped my handy Snow Tracks onto my boots (thanks Karen!) & walked down the hill
(amused the workers who observed the whole thing immensely)

Thankfully, Kiev has a pretty efficient Metro system

And for a retail girl like me, just entering the station is a treat.....

You can get it all!
Fruit....

flowers...
toys....
Your winter wardrobe!

In addition there's the surprising contrast of Soviet architectural elements...

...with in-your-face marketing installations

And while escalator bottle necks & crowding can make one question safety....

....rest assured - there is emergency safety equipment!
(reassuring, right?!)

And upon your exit, you can calm your nerves with a cup of jo & a smoke
(stands like this are common - sell instant coffee from a thermos & smokes by the individual cigarette)

But alas, with only a day left of January, we can rejoice - today we saw PUDDLES!!!!

While it may seem foolhardy to celebrate with the first melted snow, I'm gleefully present our forecast....
(4 more days of snow melting to come)

So with that - goodbye January!  Adios, до свидания, good riddance!

Here's to February, being healthy & kissing the pavement

The Cleanse of the Epiphany

January 19th marked the final day of the Ukrainian holidays - the Epiphany.  On this day all water is sacred – people head to lakes & rivers to wash away their sins by dunking 3 times crossing themselves after each dunk.

We got an up-close view of this ceremony from the riverside ‘camp-ground’ we headed to with friends this weekend

OK, we're not that crazy - our version of 'camping' included log cabins with fireplaces, bathrooms and heat...
(Tawnia even brought a projector & movies - clearly not roughing it!)

A cross was cut out of the ice, a ladder dropped in & a procession of people stripped down to their undies for the dunk.

Our good friend Paolo even went in....
(We knew he was a little bit crazy and now think he might also be part fish)

Logan joined 5 others for a 2 hour sauna – TWO hours?!
Apparently that is tolerable with occasional breaks outside, some vodka & dips in the lake

But the least expected dunk took place right after our arrival.  As Logan & I were distracted getting settled, the kids were out sledding down the beach onto the frozen river....

Xavier found a weak spot & went in up to his chest.
(Yes – 2 minutes into our trip & his only set of snow pants, coat & boots are SOAKED!)

But with his sins are all absolved, we couldn’t really get mad at him

Here’s to refreshing weekends & fresh starts!

The Price of Adventure

While living half way around the world in a developing country gives us plenty of adventure, it does also come at a cost.......

Efficiency
After returning from holiday in Denmark, my friend Kelly lamented how nice it was to be somewhere where "everything just works".  In Kiev, I've learned to not expect things to work straight away in order to be excited when they do (instead of mad when they don't)......

Take our garbage.....
(It's been piling up for a month.  Lucky we were gone for 2 weeks of that)

I asked our friend & neighbor, Inna, what was going on and she reported the company told her they "do not want to come to our district anymore".  Of course, they did not disclose this when I recently paid for 6 months of service.

That said, looking at the 'excited when it does work side', we were pretty happy to see this....
(HUGE chunks of ice someone scraped off of our road while we were gone!)

Jet Lag
We had a fab time over break visiting both coasts in the US, AND the 10 hour time zone trip came with a price too.....

Day 2 back - Zoe at 5pm
(passed out before dinner)

Zoe at 4am
(a bit groggy, but ready for that dinner she missed)

Zoe at 4:30 am
(Lego Friend party time!)

The next day, Zoe at 5pm again

(I swear - we did NOT tell her she could only lay down in the bathroom)

Zoe AND Xavier at 2am - AGH!
Keep in mind, the kids had school these days too.  One of Xavier's friend's reported to his mom that "Xavier changed over break - he is a lot more angry".  Jet lag does not make friends.

BUT, what fun is it to spend all of our time focusing on the challenges?!

We try to keep too busy looking for the cheap thrills.....
(Yes, my favorite grocery store always keeps these little guys in stock.  Personally, I prefer my pork sliced & in cellophane - maybe we'll get more open minded next year)

AND, focus on the fab people here.  Just today, a friend dropped off a care package
(yes, chocolate chip cookies DO make everyplace a better place)

So here's to adventure & the quest to see the silver lining more than the clouds

Mountain highs & travel lows

After explaining we planned to go from Florida for Xmas to Tahoe for New Years, a friend asked "Are you high?!".  As we packed up our 8 suit cases & 5 carry ons, I started to wonder.

As Xavier began throwing up on the first of the 3 flights cross country, I really started to wonder.
(Karma works - Beware of refusing to swap seats so a mom can sit next to her kids. I suspect this man regretted his stubbornness)

That said, we had a fantastic time in the mountains - the trip was well worth it....

Fresh snow & blue skies

Fab skiing & sledding

Fun with family & friends

US supplies
Despite being 45 minutes from a major town, we found a way to load up on more goods for my "happy place"

That + ski gear + Xmas gifts  = yet another luggage set from Costco
(OMG if you have not tried these 4 wheel suitcases, you must!  50lbs a breeze for even a 5 year old to push)

I couldn't believe Logan managed to puzzle all the bags in....

Still, Our 45 minute drive to the airport felt like ~5 hours....

....to all except the quite pleased with himself bigger brother

Some ~24 hours later, we made it home safely and only a bit road worn.

10 of the 11 checked bags made it....

Only a few of the US goods exploded in transit
(green frosting was luckily contained by a Safeway bag)

(Barbie lipgloss apparently do not like mountain altitude)

All things considering, a relatively smooth return from a super fun trip.  That said, my New Years resolution is to pack lighter in 2013.

Happy New Year!
